French senate seeks to ban BPA in food containers

ENDS Europe: "A group of nine lawmakers in France's upper parliamentary house, the senate, have proposed to ban the use of controversial bisphenol-A (BPA) in plastic food containers such as baby feeding bottles."

There are concerns BPA, a plastics intermediate, could disrupt endocrine hormone systems in humans. The senators invoke the precautionary principle, citing studies linking the chemical to prostate and breast cancer as well as other diseases such as diabetes.

BPA can migrate in small amounts into food and beverages stored in plastic containers. Last year, European food safety authority EFSA confirmed the EU tolerable daily intake (TDI) of BPA in food provides "a sufficient margin of safety". But in June the Canadian government said it was going to ban BPA in baby feeding bottles.
