BPA to be looked at in REACH

ECHA Press Release BPA, which has long been a concern because of its ability to disrupt hormone systems, is due to be evaluated by Germany in 2012.

In the draft list it was identified by its systematic name 4,4'-isopropylidenediphenol.

Member states will receive €50,000 per substance and have 12 months to complete their assessments. After that they may conclude there are no risks or issue legally binding requests for more information.

The evaluation list is not a blacklist signalling automatic regulatory action. Chemicals on it have been chosen according to criteria drawn up by ECHA, including extent of exposure and possible health or environmental risks.
