Anti-BPA zealots: 'Damn the studies; full speed ahead'

The Orange County Register: "At the vanguard of this move in California is the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRCD), which enjoys a robust $108 million annual budget and which rarely is shy about throwing its considerable weight around with abandon.

The latest gambit by the NRCD is to have BPA declared a 'reproductive intoxicant' under the terms of California's so-called 'Proposition 65,' known officially as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986. In support of its drive against BPA, the Council has filed a 327-page petition with the agency responsible for such action – the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA).

The NRCD seems to be relying on the sheer weight of its petition to counter studies already conducted by OEHHA concluding that BPA should not be listed as an intoxicant. Federal studies by the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Institutes for Health have reached similar conclusions – prudently calling for additional studies before further restrictive action against BPA."
