Chemicals in a can? How you and your family can be BPA-free

The Native Harvest brand also offers organic vegetables in cans with BPA-free lining. The most problematic vegetable for manufacturers seeking out BPA alternatives has been the tomato--the acidity in canned tomatoes breaks down linings that otherwise proved successful for canning beans and veggies. Even Eden Organic tomatoes still come in BPA-lined cans.

But with the power of parent company General Mills behind it, organic brand Muir Glen announced they have found a BPA-free lining for their tomatoes and will be phasing it in as they can this year's harvest. Assuming that 'phasing in' means they are using up the old cans before they start canning with the BPA-free product, that means the average consumer still can't walk out of a grocery store knowing she bought a nontoxic can of tomatoes."
