German NGO finds bisphenol A in drinks cans

Chemical Watch: "German environmental group BUND says tests on11 canned drink products, including Sprite, Red Bull, Nescafe and Faxe beer, found bisphenol A in all the can linings, but not in all the drinks themselves. Levels per tin ranged from 0.3 to 8.3 micrograms. The highest level in a liquid was 3.9 micrograms per litre in Faxe beer.

The group wants the German federal government to ban the use of bisphenol A-containing plastics, such as polycarbonate and epoxy resins, in products that come into contact with food or the skin. It also wants it to put pressure on the European Food Standards Authority to consider tough restrictions on the use of bisphenol A in food contact materials when the Authority holds its Member State experts workshop in April to discuss current scientific work on the chemical."
