Renegade Neurologist: "But a provision that would also ban BPA from the plastic liner in infant formula cans is helping intensify opposition from Associated Oregon Industries, grocers and food processors.
That provision could boost costs for the federally subsidized formula given to poor mothers, opponents warn.
They say there aren’t low-cost, practical alternatives to BPA-infused plastic can liners, which allow formula makers to sterilize liquid formula at high temperatures inside the cans.
At a hearing today before the Senate environment committee, they also said the bill, written to ban BPA in containers for liquid or food intended primarily for children 3 and under, could be interpreted to apply to a variety of canned goods.
“Does that mean Campbell’s soup, does that mean apple sauce?” said Craig Smith of the Northwest Food Processors Association.
Sen. Jackie Dingfelder, D-Portland, the committee’s chairwoman, said Senate Bill 1032 is clearly intended to apply only to formula.
The bill is backed by a coalition of environmental, health and union groups led by the Oregon Environmental Council."
